Flipgrid is a website and application available on iPhones and Androids. It is a video discussion forum that allows students to interact with one another through a video and hear their peers' opinions on the same topic. It allows teachers to evaluate where students are in understanding a topic and allows students to connect in an unconventional way in the classroom. In today's society, FaceTime and Skype have become increasingly popular. Students will likely have experience with these types of technology before coming to the classroom and Flipgrid shows them a way to use video chats to communicate with others in a productive way. Once the videos are posted, the other members in the classroom online can respond to the video with comments or reactions (like "liking" on Facebook). This allows students to collaborate and communicate quickly and proficiently. Students can learn from their peer's feedback and from their peer's videos.
Flipgrid can be implemented in many classroom settings and grade levels. In a Spanish classroom, students could be asked to make a video talking about a topic all in Spanish. The teacher can then hear how they are pronouncing words and if they are using proper grammar. Students can also watch each other's videos to hear how to pronounce words or phrases they may be struggling with. In an English class, students could give a 30 second or 1 minute book review and share their favorite books. That way their peers can have book ideas to read for AR or similar reading programs. This allows students to interact with one another on something related to school but also including their personal feelings towards books. In any classroom, Flipgrid can be the way teachers collect "exit tickets." Instead of having students write down a response to a prompt, give them a prompt and have them record a video of their answer to it by 4 P.M. that afternoon. That way the students have time to contemplate their answer and have time to submit their "exit ticket" for class that day. Click this link to sign up for a free account!
