What is component 2B? In order to create an environment that is rich in learning, the teacher must establish expectations and guidelines. From the beginning, the teacher needs to demonstrate how important this learning is and the expectations attached to it. By expecting work from students, the students will want to learn and meet the teacher's expectations. Another element of this component comes from students expectations of fellow classmates. In a culture that learns together, the learners will all support one another and push one another to understand the material. When this culture is created properly, the students will question each other on answers or procedures done to get certain answers. The students work together to help one another to meet the teacher's expectations.
How can it be implemented in the classroom? This component ties closely with 2A: creating an environment is of respect and rapport. By creating a respectful environment, the teacher can then set expectations for the students. If there is mutual respect between the teacher and students, the students will work hard to meet the teacher's expectations because they feel respected by that teacher. Along those same lines, when students respect one another, they will support each other and help when it is needed. Creating a culture where respect is important is key to creating a culture where learning is important. The students will be motivated to learn when the teacher respects them. The teacher also has to show a passion for the subject to motivate the students to want to fully grasp the concept.
One way to incorporate this component in your classroom is by having students anonymously proofread each other's papers. Give them a half sheet of paper to write down things they liked and things that could be improved. This helps the students to see how their peers perceived a topic as compared to how they did. Students will also be able to see the different styles of writing by reading their classmate's work. The students would be supporting one another by giving them helpful tips and complimenting aspects of their work.
