Classflow is an online interactive whiteboard tool that is almost completely free. There are resources in the "Marketplace" available to download and there are quite a few that are free. Within the interactive whiteboard tool, you can add in activities like word search, crossword, and memory games, along with others. Students can also come up to the board in the class and write on it with the Promethean or SmartBoard pens. Interacting with the presentation is a great way to engage students in the learning and draw them in. There are also options to create polls and assessments that can be added into the interactive piece. Students can access the assessments on their own devices if the teacher wants it to be independent work or it can be projected onto the front board and they can complete the assessment as a class. Classflow can be slightly tricky to use at first, but there are many videos available to watch that explain how to navigate the website. Once I understood how to navigate the website and how to embed different tools into the presentation, it was simple to create. I looked around the website at first in the Marketplace to get inspiration from other projects. Then I created my project and tried to make it as interactive as I could. I had students review what dominant/recessive traits were at the beginning and then take slow steps to be able to completely fill out a Punnett Square by themselves. The assessment is not embedded in the presentation because my co-op wanted to be able to give it to students to complete at the end of the week, not right after the presentation.
Classflow fits into component 3C, engaging students in learning. Students learn best when they are engaged in the lessons and when teachers hold their attention the whole time. Classflow makes it easy for teachers to create the engaging lessons that students benefit most from. It also makes it simple for teachers to implement component 3D, using assessment in instruction. Teachers can show the assessment on the big screen and have students complete it as a class or have them complete it on their personal devices so the teacher has access to individual responses.
Classflow relates to the SAMR model because it implements technology in the classroom while also substituting using tech instead of paper and pencil. Teachers can engage students by using Classflow in a similar way that they would if they were to hand out worksheets to each student. They also can have students take assessments through this tool instead of with a paper and pencil. I would use this tool in my future classroom as long as I have access to a Promethean or SmartBoard. I think it is a great way to engage students and use resources in an effective and useful way. Classflow also relates to the ISTE Standard for Teachers: Facilitator. Teachers facilitate activities through this interactive tool that engage students through technology and show them how tech can be useful.
Objective: The students will be able to fill out a Punnett Square with 90% accuracy. Standard 3.1.7.B1: Explain how genetic instructions influence inherited traits.
