What is component 2A? This domain is one of the most important aspects to creating a well-ordered classroom. It outlines how important respect is amongst students and between the students and the teacher. This respect is shown through the students interactions with one another, such as allowing each student to have a turn to speak. There is also a mutual respect between the teacher and the students. The teacher takes interest in the students' personal lives outside of the classroom. By doing so, the teacher is showing the students that he/she cares about them and their well-being besides what they see inside the four walls of the classroom. A respectful environment is absolutely necessary in a successful classroom for many reasons. If students do not respect one another, learning will become a secondary worry. Having respect amongst students and teachers motivates students to learn and participate more than if there is not mutual respect. Making a classroom a comfortable and welcoming environment starts with respect!
How can it be implemented in the classroom? One way of incorporating this domain in a classroom is doing a "compliment board." This would be a designated area of the classroom where students can anonymously post stars/post-it notes with compliments for other students. These compliments would be about their classwork (not based on clothes, appearance, etc.) or something they shared in class. The teacher could also do a star student of the week and make a special shout out to a certain student if they are working extra hard that week. To show the students that the teacher is seriously interested in their extra-curricular activities, the teacher could make a similar chart/board to the compliment board but this would be a schedule. There would be days listed for the next week and students can write down if they have a basketball game, talent show, or chorus concert (or any activity). This would allow the teacher and other students to attend these events to support their classmates. Even if the teacher cannot make this event, he/she would know it happened and be able to ask the student about it and show interest in the student's life.
Developing a strong relationship with students also helps with strengthening parent communications. When parent-teacher conferences come around, the teacher that has a strong relationship with students will be able to bring up certain aspects of that student's life (for example, a soccer game) to the parents. This would show the parents that this teacher is truly interested and cares about their child in the classroom and outside the classroom.
