Professional responsibilities are extremely important within schools and districts. All six components of this domain interact to make the most professional teachers. Reflecting on teaching is essential to do at the end of the day or the lesson. Taking time to think about how the lesson went, what could have been done differently, and what worked really well will help you as a teacher to better your techniques for the future which will benefit the students in the end. Maintaining accurate records of grades, attendance, and other classroom procedures is also extremely important. When there are discrepancies that arise regarding grades or attendance, having an accurate and up to date record will help to resolve these issues. While keeping these records for yourself, it is also important to communicate with families. Rather than only sending home notes when something is going wrong in class, try to send home a positive note to let the parents know what their child is doing right in class. This will help to build a relationship with the students and families. Participating in the professional community is also important and can be beneficial for all the teachers of the district. When teachers work together to provide students with the best instruction, the school/district will benefit as a whole. Teachers must also always remember that they are students too. Teachers should constantly be learning and maintaining a growth mindset so they can develop and grow as a professional. Lastly, teachers need to demonstrate professionalism inside and outside the classroom. Acting professionally is important, especially if you decide to live in the district that you teach in.
My virtual co-op, Mrs. Woller, participates in the professional community in interesting ways. She and her husband are both teachers in the same school, but their children attend the school in a different district. They both try to interact with their workplace events and the events in their children's schools. Mr. and Mrs. Woller work together to participate in events such as end of the year carnivals to show their students that they are engaged in the community that is the school district. Mrs. Woller also strives to post grades on Edline (edline.net) as often as possible. She feels that this is important so that the families and students are informed of the student's grade. It establishes a good relationship with the families and provides a simple way to communicate. She attends conferences as she can to keep herself updated on the latest research in education.
