What is component 3D? Assessment is important both at the end of instruction as well as throughout the lesson. Teachers can gain an understanding of where the students are in their learning by using formative assessment throughout the lesson. Assessment of learning is used at the end of the lesson so teachers can see if students learned what was intended for them to learn. Assessment for learning is used throughout the lesson to gauge where students are and whether the teacher needs to explain something in a different way. The first element of this component is assessment criteria. It is extremely important that students understand the criteria for what they are being assessed on. If at all possible, teachers should include students in creating the criteria for the assessment. The second element is monitoring of student learning. Monitoring the students' learning should be done seamlessly throughout the lesson. Careful planning of the monitoring is important but teachers should also be able to incorporate it while teaching the lesson. The third element of this component is feedback to students. Giving feedback to students in a timely manner helps them to be able to see what they can improve upon. Students are left guessing how they are doing when there is no feedback given. Constructive and timely feedback is essential to keeping the students informed of their performance. The last element on this component is student self-assessment and monitoring of progress. Students should be able to assess their own learning if and only if teachers have clearly outlined the criteria for learning. Students who can assess their learning are able to take action necessary for whatever they need.
How can it be implemented in the classroom? A simple way to incorporate assessment for learning is by using formative assessment throughout lessons. This can be as simple as having students think-pair-share about the topic at the beginning of the lesson so the teacher can gauge where they are starting and go from there. Using an exit ticket can also help teachers to gauge where students are and if they understood what was taught that day. Creating a rubric is easy to do online on rubistar.4teachers.org. There are templates made that are simple to fill in with necessary information. This is helpful so that teachers can explicitly explain the criteria for assessments or projects to students and students will know exactly what is expected of them through these assessment tools.
