What is component 4E? In order to be the most effective teacher as possible, we must remember that we are students as well as teachers. We need to constantly be learning and be open to expanding our knowledge. Keeping up to date with the latest educational techniques and new technology is evidence of a teacher that is willing to grow and develop as a professional. The first element of this component is enhancement of content knowledge and pedagogical skill. This is the importance of teachers keeping themselves sharp by taking classes, reading literature, and keeping up with the latest research. Times are constantly changing and it is super important that teachers are open to change in their practice as it is necessary. The second element of this component is receptivity to feedback from colleagues. Interacting with colleagues about practices and ideas for the classroom is essential to perfecting these procedures. Being open and having a growth mindset is helpful when receiving constructive criticism from colleagues. The last element of this component is service to the profession. Staying loyal and interested in the profession is essential to growing as a teacher in the field. Teachers must be active in organizations to better their practices as well as the practices of other teachers.
How can it be implemented in the classroom? One way to implement this in the classroom is asking for feedback from a colleague. For example, a teacher may implement a new tactic for teaching a certain lesson and ask another teacher to sit in on the class during their planning period. The teacher observing can look at the students and see how they are receiving the information and try to learn it as if they were a student in the classroom. This provides the teacher administering the lesson with feedback from a colleague and helps both teachers to develop and grow as professionals. Observing another teacher and seeing what works and what does not work can help to change how you teach in your room. Receiving feedback from a professional in the field is a great way to better one's practice. Another way to implement this is by attending conferences and events that share the most up to date research in education. Teachers grow when they interact with others of the same profession from other areas. Conferences/events such as Edcamps are a great way to grow professionally and to develop a stronger professional learning network. Many times there are Act 48 hours available for a small fee as well.
