What is component 4B? Maintaining records of instructional, non-instructional, and any other classroom procedures in the classroom is essential for teachers to maintain order and organization. This includes keeping track of student attendance, grades, and progress in learning. It also includes the non-instructional items such as collecting permission slips, lunch money, or important forms. The first element to this component is student completion of assignments. Teachers need to keep an organized and accurate record of all student assignments. Maintaining this record can help teachers to see which students may be struggling and may need guidance or students that are doing exceptionally well and may need to be challenged more. The second element is student progress in learning. Utilizing formative assessment throughout lessons can help teachers to gauge where the students are and if they are grasping the information the teacher is presenting. The last element of this component is non-instructional records. This is important so that if there is any confusion, the teacher can check the records of who turned in the permission slips or money for various things and clear up the confusion.
How can it be implemented in the classroom? One way to implement this is through the use of Bloomz. Bloomz allows teachers to keep track of attendance, behavior, and to interact with parents. Teachers can easily see which students are missing school often, which are acting out, or those that are doing exceptionally well in class. Creating a routine every morning that students go through upon arrival at school makes this much more simple. When students arrive, teachers can have it set up that there is an attendance board and students move their magnet or clip to the side of "present." That way it does not take up instructional time to take attendance. The teacher can then go into Bloomz or whatever tool they use to track attendance, look at the board, and easily log it in. Teachers can also have an area where students turn in important papers such as school picture forms or field trip permission slips where students know they are expected to place the items. The teacher will then have a more organized system and know where the papers are. Keeping track of grades is clearly important, but it is also important that students have access to this grade book in some way. Whether this be through an online tool like edline.net or with a pen and binder, students should be updated periodically on their grades so they are aware what they need to work on.
