What is component 4F? An important aspect of teaching is demonstrating professionalism. There are five elements to this component; integrity/ethical conduct, service to students, advocacy, decision making, and compliance with school and district regulations. The first element, integrity/ethical conduct, is how teachers act. Showing integrity through actions is important for teachers to do so that students recognize it and reflect this in their attitude/conduct. Putting students first is essential in teaching, which is explained through the second element, service to students. The teacher must think about what is best for the students and put that thought above all else in the classroom. This will show students that the teacher cares about them and will do all they can to ensure their success inside and outside of the classroom. The third element, advocacy, ties closely to service to students. This is the idea that teachers will support whatever is in the best interest of their students, regardless of what is traditional or prior held beliefs. The fourth element is decision making. This is the result of the second and third element. Teachers make decisions based upon the students' best interest and needs. The last element, compliance with school and district regulations, is essential to establishing a rapport with the administration as well as families of the school. A teacher that adheres to the policies put in place will make it a safe and comfortable environment that fosters success in each student.
How can it be implemented in the classroom? One simple way to implement this component in the classroom is by staying active and on top of what is new and exciting in the students' lives/culture. For example, if a teacher notices that many students have iPads/iPhones now, the teacher may implement more technology in the classroom to engage students through that outlet. This would interest the students, even though it may be unorthodox for the teacher to teach through the use of technology. Staying up to date on what is new and interesting to the students can help teachers to serve the students in the best way possible. Another way to implement this in the classroom is by adhering strictly to the district guidelines. Turning in attendance on time, making sure to update grades, and providing the principle/administration with test scores as necessary is essential to establishing a reputation and relationship with the administration. A teacher that is on top of their work will demand respect in the classroom and with the families of the students they are teaching.
