What is component 3A? Teachers' communication with students is essential for a multitude of reasons. The most obvious of these is that teachers must be able to communicate the information effectively to the students. They also need to be able to communicate with students on a personal level. The first element of this component is expectations for learning. It is very important for teachers to clearly communicate what the goals for learning are at the beginning of the year. That way students know what is expected of them. The second element is directions and procedures. In order to maintain a smoothly running class, teachers must communicate clearly with the students what the directions for an activity are. The directions should be clear and concise so that students can lead themselves through the activity without much teacher interruption. The third element of this component is explanations of content. Teachers have to explain what they are teaching in an engaging way that students can connect to. The last element of this component is use of oral and written language. Students learn how to use language from their teachers so it is essential that teachers are using vocabulary and sentence structure that will help students to improve their own.
How can it be implemented in the classroom? One simple way to implement this is the classroom is having a syllabus that students can easily understand. The teacher should also spend time specifically going over what is in the syllabus at the beginning of the year, and give the students a copy so they can refer back to it throughout the year. For each project, students should also be given a rubric that outlines exactly what is expected of them in that project. That way students can work on the project knowing what their goals are and what the teacher is expecting of them. Communicating with students ties closely with component 1B: demonstrating knowledge of students. Knowing your students can help you to be able to communicate with them effectively. This especially helps with the third element of this component, which is explanations of content. Knowing the students and their interests makes it easier to explain the content in a way that engages the students and includes their interests.
